Angel Cabrera won for the first time since his release from prison on the Legends Tour. He defeated James Kingston at the Paul Lawrie Match Play by 3 and 1 score for the day at Hanbury Manor Golf Club.

Cabrera has been released from jail after spending a long three years and ten months in a correctional facility. The 2007 US Open winner was accused of domestic abuse by his former partners: Cecilia Torres Mana and Micaela Escudero. He was also convicted of assault, theft, and legal intimidation against the women.

After being released from prison ten months ago, Cabrera never dropped below 1 up from James Kingston, who is a winner on the DP World Tour. Speaking on his victory, here is what Cabrera had to say to the media:

"Thank you all very much for the support that you have all given. The truth is that this week i'm feeling very good, it was a great tournament. I have returned triumphant to this tournament. Thanks to all those who believed in me. I hope to continue winning more and continue feeling this way. Thank you everyone. "

Following his release from jail, he has since bettered himself. Having publicly admitted guilty to the allegations, he went back to rehab and battled his addiction issues with alcohol while serving his time. Cabrera told Golf Digest regarding his issues:

"I ask Micaela for forgiveness. I ask Celia for forgiveness. They had the bad luck of being with me when I was at my worst. I wasn't the devil, but I did bad things. I am deeply embarrassed because I disappointed the people closest to me and everyone who loves me through golf. Golf gave me everything and I know I will never be able to repay the debt I owe this sport."

Angel Cabrera set to play at the PGA Champions Tour

After spending a total of 30 months behind bars in Brazil and Argentina, Angel Cabrera returned to professional golf on the Legends Tour. He was released ten months ago and was allowed to return to the PGA Tour from December of 2023.

He recieved his US visa in May 2024 and is expected to return to a full tournament schedule soon. His coach, Charlie Epps, said that the Argentina native might move to Houston, Texas and play on the Champions Tour. Cabrera missed the 2024 Masters at Augusta National due to issues with his visa application.

Angel Cabrera played on the soil of the United States of America for the first time since his conviction for domestic violence. The 54-year-old played the 2024 PGA Tour Champions' American Family Insurance Championship in Madison, Wisconsin at the University Ridge Golf Course.

The tournament marked the former US Open winner's first time playing in the States in four years. His last time was in 2020. He went on to finish tied for 43rd place.
