Augusta Masters' caddie Carl Jackson, who is often credited with being the record holder for most appearances in the prestigious Masters tournament, was met with a car accident on the outskirts of Atlanta on Friday.
Jackson's wife Julie shared an update about his condition with reporters. She said that the legendary caddie is in good condition despite the disastrous accident.
"A car is replaceable. We're just so thankful Carl is OK. That’s all that matters."
Carl Jackson was driving from his home in Roland, Arkansas to Augusta when he crashed into a stopped vehicle near Interstate 20. The car was found to be totally damaged.
The 2023 Augusta Masters would be the second instance since 1961 that Carl Jackson would not be caddying any golfer. The first instance came in 2015 when he had to withdraw from the competition due to abdominal pain.
Who is Carl Jackson?
A golf caddie at Augusta National Golf Club, Jackson has a record for most appearances as a caddie in the Masters tournament. He has missed just one Masters tournament since 1961 and has appeared in 54 instances. He caddied retired American professional golfer Ben Crenshaw 39 times and won two tournaments with him.
Carl Jackson first caddied at the Masters Tournament in 1961, when he was 14 years old, working for Billy Burke. He began caddying at Augusta National in 1958. He caddied for Gary Player in 1970, who placed third, and Bruce Devlin in 1964, who came in fourth. He began caddying for Crenshaw in 1976, the year Crenshaw placed second, and kept doing so through 1983, the year Augusta National decided to end its policy of requiring players to use its caddies.
Due to abdominal pain, Carl Jackson had to withdraw from caddying for Crenshaw in the 2015 Masters. Bud, Jackson's younger sibling, caddied for Crenshaw in his place of him. After Crenshaw completed the 18th green, Jackson met him and gave him an emotional greeting. The 2015 Masters, Crenshaw's 44th, would be his final, he declared.
