The Barracuda Championship is a PGA Tour professional golf tournament held in California. Established in 1999 under the name Reno-Tahoe Open, it is an alternate tournament held in August each year. In 2014, Barracuda Networks took over as the title sponsor. In 2020, the event was moved to the Old Greenwood course of Tahoe Mountain Club, which is located near Truckee, California, from its previous location at Montrêux Golf & Country Club, outside of Reno, Nevada. On the PGA Tour schedule, this is the only event that uses the modified Stableford scoring system.
Golfers who record lower scores are awarded more points than usual in the tournament, which uses positive and negative points instead of scoring against par. Since the Reno-Tahoe Open is an alternate event, the champion is not invited to the Masters Tournament. The winner nevertheless receives a two-year tour exemption, 300 FedEx Cup points, 24 OWGR points, and entrance into the PGA Championship. In August 2021, it was announced that the event would become a co-sanctioned event with the European Tour beginning in 2022.
Who won the PGA Barracuda Championship in 2024?
Nick Dunlap won the 2024 Barracuda Championship, earning him a second career PGA Tour championship. Out of the $4 million purse, he received the $720,000 winner's share. It was his first victory as a professional and his second of the season in the PGA Tour's sole event played with the modified Stableford scoring system.
Dunlap won with 49 total points after scoring 19 points, which was four points more than the day's best. Patrick Fishburn ended solo in third place with 46 points, while Vince Whaley finished solo in second place with 47 points.
Who won the PGA Barracuda Championship in 2023?
Akshay Bhatia won the 2023 Barracuda Championship, marking his first career PGA Tour victory at Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, California. A winner's share of the $3,800,000 purse, valued at $684,000, went to Bhatia.
A sudden-death playoff was imposed on Akshay Bhatia and Patrick Rodgers when they both finished the tournament with 40 points using the modified Stableford scoring system. On the last hole, Rodgers had a chance to win the event hands-down, but he missed a 10-foot putt. With Bhatia's approach coming in at 15 feet, Rodgers was unable to get up and down for par, allowing Bhatia to win with a two-putt. In this co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour, Jens Dantorp and Julien Guerrier tied for third place with 37 points each.
