It is a biographical story of Matt Hamill, the first deaf wrestler to win the National Collegiate Championship. Hamill, played by Russell Harvard, learns to overcome his disability and conquer the ring. A true story of the underdog emerging champion, won over audiences in America. The Oren Kaplan directed movie won the audience awards at film festivals at Newport Beach, Florida, Miami, Philadelphia and Cleveland. To add a sense of genuineness in their effort, the movie makers casted Harvard for the lead role, who is also deaf in real life. It gets a 4.1 star rating on Netflix.
1. The Perfect Game (2009)
The Perfect Game is an American drama flick directed by William Dear, based on the 2008 book 'The Perfect Game' by William Winokur. Based on a true story set in 1957, the movie is the journey of Cesar Faz (Clifton Colins Jr.). He moves to Monterrey, Mexico after being let go by the St. Louis Cardinals as a clubhouse attendant. Still in love with baseball, Faz takes a young pitcher Angel Macias (Jake. T Austin) under him and forms Monterrey's first Little League team. The team makes their way into the Little League World Series final and faces a team from La Mesa, California. Met with racist comments, and language barrier in USA, the Mexican youngsters go on to win the event under Faz's coaching, the first non-US team to do so. The movie has its share of cliches, but scores brownie points for its simple and endearing approach. The movie though rated a very average 6.9 by IMDB, has a 4.2 star rating on Netflix.
