The next Ryder Cup will be held at the incredibly challenging Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, New York. Team USA captain Keegan Bradley recently announced Brandt Snedeker as his second vice captain, joining Webb Simpson in the role.
Snedeker has made an incredible return to golf after undergoing life-saving chest surgery in 2023. The pain initially surfaced at the 2017 British Open, leading to his withdrawal. Snedeker was diagnosed with manubrium joint instability, a very rare condition. He battled pain for several years before making the decision to opt for surgery.
The newly appointed Ryder Cup vice captain underwent an experimental manubrium joint stabilization surgery last year to address a chronic injury causing significant pain since 2017. The procedure involved a bone graft from Snedeker's hip to his sternum. Here's what Snedeker had to say about the operation:
"They took a bone about the size of my thumb out of my hip and they cut my sternum open and cut across it and made a huge incision. They dialed out about the size of my pinkie on the lower part of the sternum and upper part and put that bone in the middle of them and created a dowel-like thing. And then wrapped it with bone putty and paste and tried to let it heal and reattach itself. So (they) broke my sternum on purpose, cut my sternum open, and then reattached it."
"I am so grateful to Keegan and the PGA of America" - Brandt Snedeker on being named 2025 Ryder Cup vice captain
With the prestigious Ryder Cup set for September 26–28 next year, Bradley, along with his vice captains Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker, have already initiated preparations.
Snedeker, a two-time Ryder Cup veteran, boasts an impeccable record in the competition. Having competed in 2012 and 2016, he notably achieved a perfect 3-0-0 record in his second appearance, becoming the sole undefeated American player on the team. Here's what the 43-year-old said following his appointment:
"I am so grateful to Keegan and the PGA of America for giving me the opportunity to represent my country in the role of vice captain. The Ryder Cup is unlike anything in our sport and I hope to bring the passion and pride to help Keegan deliver his vision of what a Ryder Cup in New York should look like. I am so excited to serve alongside my good friend Webb and know we will do everything in our power to help Keegan and the players be ready for a great competition next September at Bethpage Black."
