Carlos Ortiz made his debut on the LIV Golf in 2022 and was signed into Joaquin Niemann's Torque GC in 2024. Ortiz started in the Saudi-based league with Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC before rejecting his contract extension to join Niemann at Torque GC as a free agent.
While appearing in the "Fairway to Heaven" podcast with Jerry Foltz and Su-Ann Heng, Carlos Ortiz broke down the differences between Joaquin Niemann and Sergio Garcia in their captaincy. Ortiz said that both captains are different "in a lot of ways." The Torque GC star praised the support his former captain Garcia gave him and said,
" Sergio is a great guy. He's always been awesome to me and helped me in a lot of different ways. Just to start, the age difference is completely different. " [at 33:38 - 33:59]
He further said that Garcia is a captain who would "push you to do better" and will always offer help with technical matters on the driving range. However, Carlos Ortiz claimed to feel more connected with his current Torque GC captain, Joaquin Niemann. He said,
" I think what is great about Joaquin and that I love being around him is that he's not going to tell you anything, he's just gonna show you. He's not gonna tell you have to act this way or you have to practice or you have to do this. Just watch him and you'll learn, that's the kind of guy. He's not going to be bothering you with words and giving you a speech or anything." [at 34:05 - 34:26]
Carlos Ortiz said that Joaquin Niemann "really struggles to express himself." Ortiz felt that he was able to learn a lot from Niemann just by watching him and observing his captain work hard.
