Team USA won the 2024 Solheim Cup 15.5 to 12.5. The event was held at Robert Trent Golf Club in Virginia, and there were several iconic clashes throughout the three days.
The Americans started the Solheim Cup well and built up a clear lead from day one. However, the Europeans were ready to fight to the end and proved it during the singles matches.
Let's take a look at how each day at the Solheim Cup played out:
Solheim Cup 2024: Friday Morning Foursomes
The Solheim Cup 2024 started with a very attractive foursomes match, pitting Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz against Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit. The so-called "Team KoCo" controlled the match from the start and won 3&2 without having to play all 18 holes.
In the next match, Rose Zhang and Lauren Coughlin also did not need to play all 18 holes to defeat Celine Boutier and Albane Valenzuela 3&2. Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark gave Europe their first point by beating Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho 2-up. Lilia Vu and Sarah Schmelzel closed out the morning by beating Carlota Ciganda and Linn Grant 3&2.
The USA was winning 3 to 1.
Friday Afternoon Fourballs
The Friday afternoon fourball matches began with one of the most anticipated duos of the Solheim Cup, Nelly Korda and Megan Khang. The two friends had never played together before, but the pairing was a success.
Korda and Khang defeated Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire by 6&4 in only 14 holes. In addition, the duo became a fan favorite for the great spirit they showed.
The second match was played by four Solheim Cup veterans. Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom defeated Lexi Thompson and Alison Lee by 6&5 in 13 holes.
Lauren Coughlin and Sarah Schmelzel defeated Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark 3&2, while Andrea Lee and Rose Zhang beat Charley Hull and Linn Grant 5&4 in 14 holes.
The USA was winning 6 to 2.
Saturday Morning Foursomes
"Team KoCo" once again led the day of foursomes and performed at a high level. They defeated Carlota Ciganda and Emily Pedersen for their fourth point as a duo, having already won two points in the 2023 edition.
Korda and Corpuz became the first American pair to win four consecutive foursomes points in Solheim Cup history.
Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit defeated Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho 1-up, while Lexi Thompson and Lauren Coughlin beat Georgia Hall and Maja Stark 4&3. Anna Nordqvist and Celine Boutier defeated Lilia Vu and Sarah Schmelzel 4&3.
The USA was winning 8 to 4.
Saturday Afternoon Fourballs
For Saturday's match, U.S. captain Stacy Lewis decided to rest her top player, Nelly Korda. As a result, she handed the responsibility of opening for the United States to the duo of Megan Khang and Alison Lee.
The strategy worked perfectly as Lee and Khang beat Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom 4&3 in 15 holes. A hole out by Lee from the 2nd fairway led to one of the most controversial celebrations of the event, with the American caddies going topless.
Andrea Lee and Rose Zhang also won their point, beating Celine Boutier and Linn Grant 6&4 in 14 holes.
Europe did not give up and won two points in the next two matches. Carlota Ciganda and Emily Pedersen beat Lexi Thompson and Ally Ewing 2&1 and Georgia Hall and Charley Hull beat Lilia Vu and Allisen Corpuz 2-up.
The USA was winning 10 to 6.
Sunday Singles
Going into the day's singles play, Team USA needed just 4.5 points to win the Solheim Cup, while Europe needed 8 points to tie and keep the trophy. The Europeans could not pull off a miracle, but they did earn 6.5 points out of the 12 on the table.
Nelly Korda started for the fourth time in a row (Solheim Cup record) against Europe's top-ranked golfer Charley Hull. The Englishwoman controlled the match from the outset and defeated Korda 6&4 in just 14 holes.
The opposite was true in the match between Megan Khang and Emily Pedersen. The American did not allow the European any leeway and defeated her 6&5 in just 13 holes.
Georgia Hall defeated Alison Lee 4&3 and Allisen Corpuz beat Anna Nordqvist 4&3. Rose Zhang won her fourth point out of a possible four (record) by beating Carlota Ciganda 6&4 in just 14 holes.
Andrea Lee and Esther Henseleit tied for the first draw of the event. Celine Boutier was losing her match against Lexi Thompson 3-up on the front nine, but the Frenchwoman came back spectacularly to win 1-up in 18 holes.
Lauren Coughlin tied Maja Stark in another spectacular comeback, winning three of the last eight holes. It was the 14th point for the USA.
Lilia Vu also was losing her match against Albane Valenzuela, trailing 2-up on the 16th hole, but spectacularly won the last two holes to tie and give her team the half point needed to win the Solheim Cup.
But there were still three matches to play. Leona Maguire defeated Ally Ewing 4&3, Madelene Sagstrom defeated Sarah Schmelzel 1-up and finally Jennifer Kupcho won the last point for the USA by defeating Linn Grant 2&1.
The USA won the 2024 Solheim Cup 15.5 to 12.5.
