Full Swing, the hit documentary series on Netflix, has been renewed for a second season. The documentary strove to highlight the ins and outs of golf at a time when it's never been more divided. The split between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, who confirmed the renewal, was front and center.
The tour's official Twitter account posted the news that the show would be getting a second season, which is no small feat.
Netflix often doesn't let shows get new seasons, so a second season for a docuseries is a huge win for those involved with Full Swing.
Even popular and well-received shows get cancelled after a season in favor of Netflix's other pursuits, so a lot of people must have tuned in to watch the first season.
Netflix renews Full Swing for a second full season
According to The Athletic, the show and other sports shows like it (Break Point also got renewed) are very good for Netflix. Brandon Reigg, Vice President, Unscripted Originals & Acquisitions said:
“These shows quickly appealed to core fans of golf and tennis, and also recruited brand new fans from all around the world. Like so much of our growing sports slate, the compelling characters, competitive stakes, and vibrant storytelling reveal sides of the game you’ve never seen before, and we’re excited to follow the unpredictable turns of the year ahead.”
Many golfers will be excited to have the series return. According to the PGA Tour, Tony Finau said the crew was everywhere for the documentary, showcasing how dedicated they were to capturing the game and its players for their audience.
“They were everywhere. On off-weeks they were home with me. I felt like they did a lot of filming. I knew when I said yes that that was a possibility. I told my wife. She was all-in; she didn’t mind it. It got to a point where it felt like they were just a fly on the wall."
Even before the official renewal, crews were working on getting more for a potential second season. In the instance that Netflix didn't renew it, it may have sought another home.
Chad Mumm, the executive producer of the series told Golf Digest in February:
"I can neither confirm nor deny that those cameras are our cameras following Max [Homa] and several other players this week at the WM Phoenix Open. But we're not saying anything publicly right now."
Clearly, the crew was ready to continue and get more footage to show their audience exactly what was going on.
Full Swing's first season was incredible. It showcased the biggest names in golf and had no holds barred.
Rory McIlroy in particular was throwing aggressive shots at LIV Golf players like Phil Mickelson.
Golfers from both sides got extremely candid about their situations, which only improved the quality and authenticity of the show.
The second season will have a tough act to follow, but Full Swing fans will be excited to know it's coming back with even more inside content.
