The first round of the 2024 BMW Championship is underway at the Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado. Last year's winner, Viktor Hovland, seeks to defend his title this week. He will be aiming to become the second golfer in the event's history to win back-to-back titles. Here's a look into the first ever golfer to have accomplished the feat.
Patrick Cantlay won the 2021 BMW Championship in a gruelling playoff with Bryson DeChambeau. Both had a 72-hole score of 27 under par after carding in six under par each on the final day. Cantlay and DeChambeau then entered into a sudden death playoff that lasted for an incredible six holes.
After Cantlay's birdie on the par three 17th hole, the LIV Golf star responded with a birdie as well. Cantlay then went on to birdie the par four 18th hole to seal the victory. The PGA Tour star went home with a cheque worth $1,710,000 and 2,000 FedEx Cup Points.
However, one victory was not enough for him. Cantlay went on to win the 2022 BMW Championship with a total score of 14 under par to become the first player in the event's history to win the title back-to-back. He defeated Scott Stallings by one stroke to take home a grand cheque worth $2.7 million and 2,000 FedEx Cup Points.
