The 2024 Open Championship had 17 LIV golfers in the field. Fans expected strong performances from them, especially Bryson DeChambeau who was coming off his win at the last major, the 2024 US Open.
The field at The Open had top names from LIV, like Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith, and Brooks Koepka. Despite such prominent names in the field, Xander Schauffele won the day at the 2024 Open Championship. The American golfer won his second major championship this year, after the 2024 PGA Championship in May.
Out of the 17 LIV golfers, only 11 made it to the weekend. The challenging Royal Troon course made it difficult for even the best golfers in the world, like Dechambeau and Smith, both of whom missed the cut last week.
Smith and DeChambeau had the second and third-worst finishes among LIV golfers at the Open Championship, respectively. The former Open winner Smith struggled with his game, carding +12 for his 2-day total.
DeChambeau struggled with his game from the first day and carded +9 in two rounds to miss the cut. The LIV golfer initially blamed his equipment during the post-round press conference but later accepted responsibility for his round, on his Instagram account:
"I sucked today, not my equipment," Bryson wrote.
The Spanish golfer Jon Rahm recorded the best finish of a LIV golfer as he finished T7 for the event. He also registered his best finish in a major championship this year. He was the only LIV golfer who remained under par for the event as he carded -1 at the Royal Troon.
The next best finish came from the American John Catlin. He carded +2 for the event, finishing T16, while Dean Burmester finished T19 with a score of +3.
Prominent names like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Phil Mickelson made it to the weekend, but never seemed to be in contention. They remained in the middle half of the leaderboard through the final two days of the 2024 Open Championship campaign.
