Golf has a rich history and tradition and became an Olympic sport in the 1900 Paris Olympics. The sport continued to be a part of the Olympics in the next edition at St. Louis in 1904.

After the St. Louis Olympics, golf failed to be an Olympic sport for about 112 years. The sport made a comeback to the Summer Games in the 2016 Rio Olympics and later the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The sport is here to stay as it continues to be a part of the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Every edition of golf has featured both men's and women's individual competitions apart from the 1904 edition. The 1904 edition featured men's individual and men's team competitions only.
