Min Woo Lee is looking to continue his strong run of form at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship. The golfer, who is set to tee up on Wednesday, revealed that his spirits are high even if it rains at the Austin Country Club this week.
Coming off the back of a T6 finish at the Players Championship, Lee is positive about doing well at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. The 24-year-old golfer, who was sixth in Driving Distance on the DP World Tour last season (322 yards), said that he was looking forward to his big break this week.
Speaking ahead of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play at the rain-softened Austin Country Club, Min Woo Lee said:
“Yeah, I’m just stepping on it, even if it’s raining. I’m like, oh, I miss this course. It was so fun last year.”
The two-time DP World Tour winner from Perth, Australia, went on to recall playing at last year’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event. Lee, who is projected to reach a Special Temporary Membership on the PGA Tour should he make it to the knockout stage this week, stated that he played satisfactorily last year and had a good time at the venue. It is pertinent to note that Lee beat Thomas Pieters, tied Tom Hoge and lost to Billy Horschel last time out.
Recalling the experience of playing at the event last year, Lee said:
“I played ok. It was one of my first match play events as a pro and I just love playing in front of a crowd and playing that type of golf. Bomb it, hit it close (with a) wedge, make birdie. There’s a couple drivable holes on the front nine and the back … it just suits my game.”
Min Woo Lee reveals his liking for team events
Min Woo Lee currently sits 47th in the Official World Golf Rankings and is set to play the 2023 Masters Tournament in the coming weeks. The golfer revealed that he loves playing on the PGA Tour and was looking to seal his place on the circuit. He said:
“I would love to play over here in America against the best in the world.”
The young golfer also stated that he enjoys playing in team events. Speaking ahead of his start against Sahith Theegala on Wednesday, Lee added:
“Until I was pro, I played all those team events every year, which is probably more than usual. But, yeah, I just like being in that like team environment and playing match play.”
Considering his momentum, it’ll be interesting to see how Min Woo Lee performs this week. The golfer will be aiming to potentially play all seven games in Austin – three group-play matches followed by four knockout-stage matches.
