Tiger Woods has won five Masters, but he is yet to surpass the world record set by Jack Nicklaus. He will compete at the 2023 Masters with the hope of clinching the sixth title of his career. However, Woods injuries have hampered his performance on the course over the past two years.
Woods was involved in a car accident in 2021 and was just recovering while competing at the Masters in 2022 but still managed to finish at T47.
Ahead of the 2022 Masters, Tiger Woods met with the media to discuss his health and confessed that he was looking forward to winning the title. The 15-time major champion said:
“Now everything is focused on how do I get myself into the position where I’m on that back nine on Sunday with a chance. When I decide to hang it up, when I feel like I can’t win anymore, then that will be it. But I feel like I can still do it, and I feel like I still have the hands to do it, the body’s moving good enough."
Woods also spoke about his injury and thanked his team for helping him during this crucial time. He went on to say:
“I’ve worked hard. My team has been unbelievable. I’ve been lucky to have had great surgeons and great PTs and physios that have worked on me virtually every day. And we’ve worked hard to get to this point. It’s been a tough, tough year."
"He’s the greatest player to ever play" - When Fred Couples appreciated Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods has won 15 major titles in his career, including five Masters, four PGA Championships, three US Opens, and three many Open Championships. However, the injuries forced him to miss several events before finally competing at the 2022 Masters.
Fred Couples appreciated his efforts and dubbed Woods the greatest player of all time. Couples said in a press conference ahead of the 2022 Masters:
“It’s not shocking because he’s the greatest player to ever play. If he can walk around here in 72 holes, he’ll contend. He’s too good."
Brooks Koepka also praised Tiger Woods playing at the 2022 Masters.
"I was in somewhat of his shoes trying last year two weeks after surgery. This place isn’t exactly an easy walk. I understand what he’s up against. It’ll be difficult. But if anybody can do it, it’s him.
“I’m happy he’s becoming healthier and able to play golf … we need him, the game needs him, everybody needs him, the fans need him, all that stuff. But at the end of the day everybody is just out here competing. I’m worried about myself and I’m sure everybody else is worried about themselves.”
Interestingly, Koepka joined LIV Golf last year, and Woods has not been on good terms with the Saudi-backed series players.
Tiger Woods will be back on the Augusta field next week, which will take place from April 6 to 9.
