The 2024 Olympics' golf events are set to be played over the next two weeks at the iconic Le Golf National course, located on the outskirts of Paris, France. The men's individual stroke play event will run from August 1-4, while the women take on the course from August 7-10.
For the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the Interational Golf Federation is trying to change the format to further the game and its exposure in the world. Having been in the games from 2016, the sport has pushed players to excel and make their respective countries proud.
The Olympics currently has two seperate individual strokeplay events for men and women. However, Antony Scanlon, director of the International Golf Federation, believes that adding a third event would be benificial in growing the sport and generating more viewers.
The proposed new event will feature mixed men's and women's teams with two formats of play - alternate shot and best ball. It would take place after the men's event and before the women's. The field would consist of 16 teams formed from the combined 120-player field.
While the Olympics currently awards a total of six medals, Scanlon belives that it isnt enough in comparison to other sports such as judo, which awards 45 medals. Here's what Scanlon told Golf Digest about the new proposal:
" Certainly, the mixed team event is something the athletes we're speaking to are excited about. We've got great support from the organizing committee in L.A., and we'd love to slot it in just after the men's event. But I think the opportunity to win another medal, the opportunity for us to showcase it with a mixed team event is fantastic and that will attract a wider audience and a different audience, I think. "
