The Genesis Scottish Open is a regular European Tour event, co-sponsored by the PGA Tour since 2022. It is one of the European Tour's premier events, counted among the five Rolex Series events.
There are only four Majors that take place every year, and the Scottish Open is not one of them. However, it is an important tournament, as it is the last chance for players to qualify for the final Major of the year, The Open Championship. Since 2014, the top three finishers in the Scottish Open automatically earn a spot in The Open Championship if they are not already exempted.
The Scottish Open began in 1971 as part of the European Tour, with Neil Coles winning the first edition by defeating Brian Huggett in a playoff. It was initially called the Sunbeam Electric Scottish Open. Over the years, there have been several title sponsors, but since the PGA Tour began co-sponsoring it in 2022, it has been sponsored by Genesis.
The tournament has been held at various venues over the decades; however, it has been hosted by The Renaissance Club since 2019. It takes place in stroke format for four rounds, and it has a purse of $9 million
Men's golf has four Majors: the Masters, the PGA Championship, the US Open, and The Open Championship. While the first three usually take place in the USA, The Open Championship is held on the coastal links of the United Kingdom.
It is important to note that three of the four Majors of 2024 have already been successfully concluded, and the last will take place next week at Royal Troon.
