Is Rory McIlroy playing the 2024 Irish Open? Golfer's availability explored

Rory McIlroy has enjoyed a fairly consistent season on the PGA Tour this year. Though he hasn't managed to secure a victory in several tournaments, the talented Irishman is gearing up to compete at a DP World Tour event later this month.

Earlier this year, in January, McIlroy announced his participation in the 2024 Amgen Irish Open, set to take place at the Royal County Down, just an hour from his hometown, from September 12 to 15. The four-time Major champion will be returning to the course where he represented Great Britain and Ireland at the 2007 Walker Cup as a junior golfer.

McIlroy won his maiden and sole Irish Open title in 2016 at The K Club. Here's what the PGA Tour sensation had to say about returning to the tournament after missing the last three editions (via DP World Tour):

"Since making my first appearance at the Irish Open nearly 20 years ago, it has been such a special tournament to play in, but it will be doubly so for me this time round. I’m incredibly excited to have the opportunity play in this year’s Irish Open at a venue so close to home. Royal County Down is a fantastic venue and I still have some great memories from the 2007 Walker Cup. The crowds are always so supportive of all the Irish golfers taking part and the atmosphere is unlike any other we have at a golf tournament. Time and time again the fans prove that they are some of the best in the world and I can’t wait to see them out in support of us again.”
