In 2005, the WGC-American Express Championship witnessed a thrilling ending as Tiger Woods beat John Daly in the playoffs to win the tournament. Woods' victory came after Daly missed an easy 2-foot par putt on the second hole of the playoff.
After the tournament's conclusion, Woods shared his thoughts on what transpired between him and Daly at the Harding Park Golf Course. Based on his statement, it was clear that the American golf legend was not happy with the way he won the WGC-American Express Championship that year.
In an interview, Woods said:
"That's not how you are supposed to win a golf tournament. We're in a playoff, we're battling, and J.D. played beautifully all week. It shouldn't end like that."
John Daly missing this putt in the playoff did come as a surprise to many because moments earlier he had managed to hit a 15-foot birdie putt. However, Daly did end up missing when it mattered the most, and like Woods, he spoke about the same after the tournament ended.
Daly said:
"I really thought I was going to make the (birdie) putt. You know, what do you do? I know Tiger didn't want to win that way, and I certainly didn't want to lose that way." [via ESPN]
The WGC-American Express Championship was one of the six tournaments Tiger Woods won that season, including two Major championships. On the other hand, John Daly did not win a single tournament that year.
