Bryson DeChambeau has long been regarded as one of golf's most technical players. While he can and often does use skill and strength to succeed, he's also a player looking for every advantage he can get, whether it's from equipment, mechanics, or something else.
Early last year, DeChambeau revealed one of his signature hot takes. He does things a little differently than a lot of golfers, but it works well for him. He's now a two-time major champion and had a solid season with LIV Golf last year.
He offered up a drill he does to help keep track of where the club is in space.
"This may sound crazy, and there's a reason I turned my hat back around. You've gotta learn to hit the golf ball with your eyes closed. Make sure you're in a safe environment where you're not going to toe shank it or heel shank it."
As long as someone's in a safe area like that, DeChambeau recommends doing this drill to learn where the center of the club is at all times throughout a swing.
"If you can do that, you're on the pathway to hitting it the best in the world. This is what the best in the world can do is they can do, they literally close their eyes, hit the ball, and know where it's going... It's a bit psychotic, but what else is new with me?"
The video was shared on May 29. Just two weeks later, DeChambeau would outduel Rory McIlroy at the US Open, winning his second title at that tournament, so perhaps his unorthodox drills are more useful than they might seem.
Bryson DeChambeau on track for Indian debut
At the end of this month, Bryson DeChambeau will play professional golf in India for the first time. The International Series, which is partnered with LIV Golf, is heading to the sub-continent later this month.
His LIV teammate Anirban Lahiri is set to play as well. It's Lahiri's home country, one that DeChambeau is excited to travel to. He said via Golf Monthly:
"I will support him fully, and if everything works out, I am extremely excited about the opportunity to play in India."
Bryson DeChambeau added:
"I have never been there, but it’s a country that has fascinated me. I have always loved being a global player and I greatly enjoy playing in as many countries as possible.”
DeChambeau has confirmed his appearance at the event, but Lahiri said:
"It will be massive for Indian golf fans if Bryson is there."
The event will be held from January 30 to February 2 at DLF Country Club and Golf and is officially titled the International Series India.
