Adam Scott's rough outing in the final round of the Open Championship 2012 cost him the Major title. He was in the lead after 54 holes but an unfortunate struggle, particularly in the final few holes, cost him the title.
Scott started the Open Championship final round in 2012 with a bogey on the first hole but then made a birdie on the next. However, he then made two bogeys on the third and sixth holes. On the back nine, he carded a birdie on the 14th but then made four back-to-back bogeys, resulting in him wrapping up the round at 5-over 75. He ultimately missed the title by just one stroke.
Following the tournament, Scott opened up about his disappointing performance and said in 2012, via First Post:
“It was a very sloppy finish … and disappointing to finish that way. I played so well all week. I wasn’t even really out of position but I managed to get myself in some trouble and couldn’t make the putts to get out of it over the last four holes. But that’s what was to be expected coming in here. It’s a championship golf course, it’s very difficult.”
Unfortunately, it was not his day and he lost the title. Ernie Els won the Open Championship in 2012. Els also had some rough times on the greens on the front nine, but he carded four birdies on the back nine. He played a final round of 2-under 68, jumped four spots on the leaderboard, and won the Major by one stroke.
Did Adam Scott win any Major in his career?
Although Adam Scott missed an opportunity to win his maiden Major in 2012 at the Open Championship, he went on to win the Masters next year. The Aussie has won only one Major title in his career so far, the 2013 Masters.
However, the victory wasn't easy for Scott. After four rounds, he was tied for the lead with Angel Cabrera. They headed to a playoff, and ultimately Scott clinched the title and earned the prestigious green jacket for winning the Masters.
Although Scott has not won any other Major since then, he has come close to victory several times. In 2015, he finished in T4 place at the U.S. Open and then third at the PGA Championship in 2018. In fact, in 2013, he was also impressive in other Majors. He was tied for third at the Open Championship and settled in T5 place at the PGA Championship.
So far, Adam Scott has competed in the Majors 94 times and made the cut in 71 of his outings. He has won one Major, was the runner-up twice, and had 20 finishes in the top 10 throughout his career in the Majors.
