Bryson DeChambeau emerged victorious at the 2024 US Open that was played at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club No. 2 course earlier this week. With a six under par 274 score, DeChambeau walked away with a massive cheque worth $4.3 million and a ten-year exemption into the tournament.
Matthieu Pavon, who finished in fifth place at the 2024 US Open, was paired with Bryson DeChambeau for the final round. However, the Frenchman did not finish his final putt in a kind gesture to the winner. Speaking on the Fore Play Podcast with Daniel Rapaport, Pavon took the opportunity to break down the situation and apologise. Here's what he said:
" When we got to the side to the recording, I said, 'Bryson [DeChambeau, I'm really sorry dude. I should have probably finished it'. And he said, 'Dude, you've done the right thing. I mean, it's important for you and you've done the right call' ... He said thanks [for] not doing it because you would have shown me the line and I think it's not fair for Rory [McIlroy] and I don't want to win it that way. "
Matthieu Pavon had decided to wait to make the final putt. If he had made the putt, then Bryson DeChambeau would have received a direct read to his putt off Pavon. This action was received by the golf world in different ways. Some appreciated the decision, while others thought it was not the right thing to do.
Bryson DeChambeau gains motivation to win after victory at the 2024 US Open
Bryson DeChambeau said his second Major championship victory in four years reminded him of all the good feelings that come after chasing a trophy. He said he intends to use the motivation gained from the 2024 US Open to secure more Major titles.
DeChambeau shared a heartwarming moment between him and his manager, Connor Olson, post his win. Here's what he said on The Scoop with Claire Rogers:
" Just me and Connor, my manager ... And I just remember saying, well, I guess that's it. I looked over and it hit me and goes, no its not. There's a lot more Majors to win out there. And it was just like a full reset of gosh, this is what it's like to win a Major. But he just kept me straight. He was like, no, Bryson, this is just the beginning. "
