During the 2025 Players Championship, Golf.com reported that Spaun walked over to NBC's on-course analyst Jim "Bones" Mackay and asked:
"What Rory was up to in terms of what he was putting for up on the 18th green?"
At that moment, Carens walked over to him and said:
"Let's stay in the moment."
It was after this that Spaun tied for the regulation, with a score of 276 under 12 with Rory McIlroy. However, Spaun originally attempted a birdie, but the shot was a few inches short; regardless, he made par. He lost the event in the playoffs to McIlroy.
