The Ladies European Tour is a women's professional golf tour with roots dating back to the 1978 Women's Professional Golfers' Association (WPGA). The former should not be confused with the 1944 WPGA in the United States, which was dissolved in 1949, clearing the way for the LPGA. Regardless, the 1978 WPGA was founded by the United Kingdom and Ireland's The Professional Golfers Association, which by 1982 had lost most of its sponsors.
As a result, the tour members founded the Women Professional Golfers' European Tour Limited in 1988, which ultimately evolved into the Ladies European Tour (LET). The Tour is a business limited by guarantee that focuses on maximizing returns, comparable to the European Tour (Men's); however, both are separate entities.
