Greg Norman made an appearance at the Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland for the penultimate round of the 2024 Open Championship. Having aided in the successful launch of the LIV Golf league as the CEO and commissioner, the former PGA Tour star had run into several issues with the R&A. However, Norman was spotted at the Scotland course with an R&A official guest badge.

Having attended the Augusta Masters this year as a ticketed patron, Norman was present at the Open Championship this week with former winner privileges. Speaking on his attendance at the Royal Troon this week, here's what Norman told Golf Digest:

"It's good to be back. The Open has a lot of history for me. To me, it was the best championship of all. The Masters is the Masters, but I put this one up above all four of them because it is a true open. People can come and play [qualify]. I love the way they rotate the host course and it’s links golf. In my professional career, I prided myself on coming back and playing the Open Championship. "

Greg Norman has run into quite a bit of trouble with the R&A since LIV Golf's inception in 2021. Prior to the start of the Open Championship, Norman was asked to check the "resale market" for tickets for the event after attending the Masters as a regular patron.

The Open Championship had not invited Greg Norman to their 150th anniverasary celebratory dinner despite him being a former winner and he was banned from attending the 2021 edition of the tournament. The tournament committee defended their decision by stating that the choice was made "to ensure that the focus remains on celebrating the Championship and its heritage."

Following the situation, Norman, has candidly spoken out about the actions by the R&A. However, fans speculate that the tensions have since eased a bit as the organization did take a step to suggest the LIV Golf CEO to acquire formal tickets instead of seeking a ban.

The 20-time PGA Tour winner bears two Major championship titles to his name. Greg Norman won the Open Championship in 1986 and 1993. With two of the 18 LIV Golf players making the cut through to the weekend, the Saudi-based league's CEO is cheering them onto a victory.

Scotland's harsh winds and rains have poised as a challenge to the world's best players this week. With half of the top 20 players in the world missing the cut, the links style Royal Troon course has proved to be a test for the 156 player field. Here's what Greg Norman had to say about the difficult playing conditions (via Golf Digest):

"Troon is a tough golf course. ... When you make the turn, you’ve got all that wind pushing the ball towards the railway line around Nos. 10 and 11. Those holes become even more difficult because you never play the golf course truly straight into the wind or straight downwind. It's always testing your ball flight and how you spin the golf ball. It's a quirky golf course and you have to put it in the right place. "

Greg Norman's Major Championships record explored
