Scottie Scheffler was arrested prior to the start of the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky on May 17. The mayor of Louisville County, Craig Greenberg, has issued an update on the case.
News station WDRB News took to the X platform to share the update provided by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. Mayor Greenberg said there is no video incidence for the altercation between Scheffler and Louisiana Metropolitan Police Department detective Bryan Gillis. The report states that LMPD detective and officer Gillis was not wearing a body camera or did not activate his body camera during the altercation between them.
Mayor Greenberg told WDRB, a local Louisville news station:
"We have not yet discovered any video of the initial contact between Officer Gillis and Mr. Scheffler."
Louisville Mayor Greenberg also issued a statement on the day of the incident involving the World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler and LMPD officer and detective Bryan Gills.
Greenberg said the LMPD's focus will be on the family of the deceased pedestrian who was involved in a fatal shuttle van collision. The deceased John Mills, was a crew member of the 2024 PGA Championship's vendor at Valhalla Golf Club.
The Mayor added that the arrest will be investigated and legal processes will commence as Scheffler is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment next week.
Why was Scottie Scheffler arrested?
Scottie Scheffler was arrested near the gates of Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky ahead of the start of the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship on Friday, May 17. Scheffler was charged on four counts - second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregard of signals from officers directing traffic.
An accident earlier that morning prompted officers to increase surveillance around the area of Valhalla Golf Club. A pedestrian was killed in a collision involving a shuttle bus.
Scheffler was on his way to Valhalla Golf Club to warm up for the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship. In an attempt to avoid traffic on the road leading to the club, Scheffler used a median road.
When asked to stop his vehicle by police officers, Scheffler attempted to drive past the officers. He stopped after a police officer named Bryan Gills attached himself to his car and screamed at the 2024 Masters champion to stop.
Scheffler was then handcuffed, detained by Jefferson County, and taken to the Louisville Department of Corrections. Scheffler was released from jail an hour before the start of the second round of the PGA Championship.
