Lowest scores in men's golf major history: Top 10 record explored

Shane Lowry and Xander Schauffele shot the lowest rounds in the history of men's golf majors at this week's PGA Championship. The American golfer Schauffele shot a 62 in the first round of the Major at Valhalla Golf Course on Thursday, May 16, becoming the only golfer to shoot two of the lowest rounds in a Major.

Meanwhile, Lowry fired a round of 62 on Saturday, May 18, registering his name in history for making one of the lowest rounds in men's majors. However, Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry are not the only ones to score the lowest rounds in majors; there have been many others. Here are the top 10 lowest rounds made in men's golf majors.

#1 Branden Grace

Branden Grace holds the record for shooting the joint lowest round in men's majors. He shot a round of 62 at The Open Championship in 2017. During the third round of the Major, he scored 8-under 62. He finished T6 at the event.


#2 Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler is another golfer who shot the lowest round of 62 in a Major. During the first round of the 2023 US Open, he scored 62 and registered his name in the record list. Fowler settled in a tie for fifth place at the event.


#3 Xander Schauffele

Xander Schauffele shot 62 twice at the Majors. In 2023, he played a round of 62 at the US Open during the first round of the tournament and then again shot 62 at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Course. He finished in a tie for 10th place at the 2023 US Open.


#4 Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry also played the lowest round in a Major at the 2024 PGA Championship. During the third round of the event on Saturday, May 18, he played a 9-under round to register his name in the record books.


#5 Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy played a round of 63, one of the lowest in men's majors, during the first round of The Open Championship in 2010. He was impressive with his game at the Major and tied for third place.


#6 Tommy Fleetwood

In 2018, Tommy Fleetwood shot a round of 63 at the US Open held at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. He played a round of 7-under par and finished in second place after four rounds of the event.

Fleetwood again shot a round of 63 at the 2023 US Open at the Los Angeles County Club and tied for fifth place


#7 Greg Norman

Greg Norman also played the lowest round in men's majors twice. He shot a round of 63 at The Open Championship in 1986 during the second round and then again shot a round of 63 at the Masters in 1996 during the first round of the event. He finished second at the Augusta event in 1996, while he won The Open Championship in 1986.


#8 Vijay Singh

At the 1993 PGA Championship, Vijay Singh shot a round of 63 to add his name to this list of golfers with the lowest round in a Major. During the event's second round, he played a round of 8-under 63. He finished in fourth place at the Major.

The Fijian golfer again shot a round of 63 at the US Open in 2003 held at Olympia Fields Country Club. During the second round of the Major, he played the lowest round but struggled in the next two rounds to finish in a tie for 20th place.

Brooks Koepka also played one of the lowest rounds in men's Majors. He shot a round of 63 at the 2018 PGA Championship held at Bellerive Country Club and emerged victorious at the event.

Later in 2019, Koepka again shot a round of 63 at the PGA Championship, but this time, the event was held at Bethpage Black Course. He again emerged victorious at the Major in 2019.


#10 Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm shot a round of 63 at The Open Championship held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. He played an 8-under-par round during the third round of the event. The Spanish golfer finished in a tie for second place at the Major.
