The golf world was abuzz with excitement as Max Homa announced his new multi-year contract with Cobra for equipment. In an exclusive interview with the Golf IQ podcast from Golf Digest on Sirius XM, the 34-year-old disclosed the real reason behind parting ways with Titleist.
Homa's decision to move to Cobra marks a turning point in his 11-year-long relationship with Titleist. He revealed that the move wasn't just driven by money but also by timing, opportunity, and rejuvenation.
The idea of switching equipment wasn't new to the six-time PGA Tour winner. He daydreamed about searching for his new arsenal ahead of the 2025 season. Homa said (via Golf IQ podcast on Sirius XM):
"I think this year I, for the first time, I just hit it, you know, where I drove it poorly. So for the first time I just thought, you know, I guess it's just not necessarily the golf clubs that make the ball go straight. So I might as well, when the time came to, uh, have an opportunity to look around, I did. I had never really looked ever, uh, I think right outta college, I did one trip to Taylor Made and I left, and I, I remember just thinking,I'm not gonna switch. Um, so what was the point of doing that? Yeah, I just, so it's been 11 years since I've like, looked around at other clubs, so felt like time just to see, and I really liked what I saw."
Despite signing a contract with Cobra for equipment, the deal is flexible and allows Homa to play a certain number of clubs that are not from the company. He will continue to use Titleist's ProV1 golf ball along with his woods from TaylorMade. The PGA Tour superstar said (via Golf IQ on Sirius XM):
"It's been an amazing relationship with Titleist and I'm glad I still get to be a part of the team with the, with the golf ball. Yeah. But, uh, yeah, I just love what these guys [Cobra] do and, uh, change can be fun. Uh, golf can be a bit of a slog at times, so it's kind of just nice to have a, a almost a rejuvenation in a way."
Max Homa made his first tournament appearance with his new custom built 3D printed irons from Cobra at The Sentry last week where he finished tied for 26th place with a total score of 19 under par.
