For the second time in three years, Rory McIlroy was voted PGA Tour player of the year. The award is voted on by members of the PGA Tour and McIlroy is only the fourth person to win it multiple times since it started in 1990. The other multiple winners of the Jack Nicklaus Award include Tiger Woods, Nick Price and Greg Norman.
The 25-year old McIlroy won both the British Open and PGA Championship. He became the seventh player to win both events and the first winner of the final two majors since Padraig Harrington in 2008.
"I'd like to win a lot more in my career, and I feel like I can," McIlroy said at the Dunhill Links Championship in St. Andrews.
The PGA Tour announced the award and also named Chesson Hadley as the Rookie of the Year. Time Finchem, PGA Tour Commissioner congratulated both men for their success.
"My congratulations to Rory and Chesson for their outstanding accomplishments that earned them season-ending honors from their peers," Finchem said. "Both players earned their awards with their consistent and steady play throughout the season."
He finished 12 times in the top ten, and finished in the top 25 in every one of his 17 TOUR games. He won three events, was runner up at the Honda Classic and TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, finished second at East Lake and third in the FedEx Cup. He finished eighth-place at The Masters.
McIlroy also earned the Arnold Palmer Award as the Tour’s leading money winner ($8,280,096) and the Byron Nelson Award for adjusted scoring average (68.83). A native of Northern Ireland, he is one of only three Europeans to ever be named PGA Tour Player of the Year, the others were Luke Donald of England in 2011 and Padraig Harrington of Ireland in 2008.
“I guess it just makes me realize that even though last year wasn't the year I wanted, the last three or four years have been very, very good," McIlroy said. "It gives me even more motivation to go on and work harder and try to win more tournaments, more majors, and be involved in more Ryder Cups like last week," the Northern Irishman added.
Jimmy Walker, Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Billy Horschel were the other finalists for the Player of the Year award.
