The stroke play section of the 2024 US Amateur concluded on Tuesday, August 13. 312 players teed off at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. However, only 64 will advance to to compete in six rounds of match play. The final is a 36-hole match play to determine the champion.
The cutline settled at even par at the 2024 US Amateur. 53 players have advanced to the match play portion while 14 players are tied at T54 for the 11 spots left. The 14-for-11 playoffs will be held on Wednesday, August 14 followed by the round of 64.
Jimmy Ellis, 39, won the medalist honors at the 2024 US Amateur. While several amateur players are sponsored, that's not the case with him. He has to buy his own golf equipment and doesn't receive free gear. He said (via USGA Championship):
"I've bought golf balls at both [venues] and they looked at me like I was crazy. I’m using a Hazeltine glove because I don’t have any gloves. All these guys get free stuff. I’ve got to like buy some balls… What else are you supposed to do?"
Another talented amateur, Luke Clanton, 20, who has already played in six PGA tournaments this year comfortably made the cut at the competition. However, several notable names failed to make the cut. Here's a look at each of them.
Ten golfers who have missed the cut at the 2024 US Amateur
#1 Blades Brown
Blades Brown made his PGA Tour debut at the Myrtle Beach Classic this year. The 16-year-old finished tied 26th. However, the U.S. National Junior Team member failed to make the cut at the 2024 US Amateur.
Brown scored 1-under 71 in the first round and looked comfortable to make the cut. However, he scored 5-over 75 in the second round and missed it.
#2 Miles Russell
Another member of the U.S. National Junior Team, Miles Russell also failed to make the cut at the amateur competition. He scored 4-over 74 in the first round and a 1-under 71 in the second round.
Russell, 15, not only became the youngest player to make the cut at the Korn Ferry Tour's LECOM Suncoast Classic this year but also the youngest to finish in top 25 on the PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour since 1983.
#3 Tyler Watts
Watts finished as a runner-up at the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur to Trevor Gutschewski at Oakland Hills Country Club. However, he missed the cut by 13 shots on Tuesday. He scored 4-over 74 in the first round and 9-over 81 in the second.
#4 Michael Riebe
The California native missed the cut by one shot at the US Amateur. He scored 1-under 70 in the first round and 2-over 74 in the second. He is 16th on the AJGA rankings.
#5 Jackson Koivun
Koivun missed the cut by two shots. He scored 2-under 68 in the first 18 holes and 4-over 76 in the next.
The Auburn University student is ranked third as per the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He made his PGA Tour debut at the Memorial Tournament and successfully made the cut. He also played at the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he missed the cut.
#6 Colin Prater
The 29-year-old high school science teacher missed the cut by three shots at the US Amateur. He scored 5-over 75 in the first round and 2-under 72 in the second. He also qualified for the 2024 US Open through qualifiers, but missed the cut there too.
#7 Parker Bell
Bell, another 2024 US Open qualifier and a 2023 U.S. Amateur semifinalist, missed the cut at the USA's biggest amateur golf competition. He scored 1-under 69 and 3-over 75 in two rounds to miss the cut by two shots at Hazeltine National Golf Club. He had also missed the cut at Pinehurst in the year's third Major.
#8 John Daly II
Daly II missed the cut by two shots after scoring 2-over 72 and 4-over 74 in the stroke play format. The legendary golfer's son had made his debut at the Korn Ferry Tour's Compliance Solutions Championship on a sponsor exemption.
#9 Ian Gilligan
2024 Western Amateur champion Gilligan missed the cut by one shot. He scored 4-over 76 in the first round and 3-under 67 in the second.
#10 Aaron Jarvis
Jarvis, the 2021 Latin America Amateur champion, missed the cut by nine strokes. He scored 7-over 79 and 2-over 71 in the first two rounds, respectively, at the US Amateur.
