$2.2 billion worth-Irish financier and European golfer duo beats Tyrrell Hatton in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship team competition

Irish financier Dermot Desmond and Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen won the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship pro-am team competition. They won by two strokes over Tyrrell Hatton and his father Jeff. Tyrell Hatton won the individual competition at the tournament, in a great performance for the 32-year-old in St Andrews, Scotland.

The winning duo of Desmond and Olesen carded 60, 63, 58, and 59 in the four rounds of the tournament. All 168 golfers were paired with amateurs, who ranged from family members to celebrities. The best-ball format decided the team's score, with the lower score between the pro and amateur being selected.

The $2.2 billion-worth Desmond (as per Forbes) was playing his 22nd team competition at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Talking about his state of mind on the final hole, he said,

"When you’re playing the 18th and walking over the Swilken Bridge knowing that you have to make a score, there are real nerves. Luckily, Thorbjorn holed a brilliant birdie putt on that last hole to stretch our lead further and it wasn’t me facing a downhill four-footer! And thankfully no one could get past our final score."

This was his second victory at the competition. He also won the 2010 tournament, paired with Robert Karlsson. He was runner-up in 2008 and finished third in 2006.

Putting his win in perspective, he added,

"I won the team event in 2010 with Robert Karlsson as my professional partner and that was a very proud moment. But I am in my 70s now and so I am even more proud of this one, particularly after walking around 72 holes over these four days."

He also said his three sons also played at the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He praised Thorbjorn Olesen and called him a terrific partner and "a wonderful individual."
