Luke Clanton registered his name in the history books when he finished in the top 10 at the 2024 John Deere Classic. The 53rd edition of the tournament concluded on Sunday, July 7 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.
Clanton finished T2 after an aggregate score of 24-under 260 after 72 holes. He carded 63, 67, 67, and 63 in the four rounds at the TPC Deere Run. He became the first amateur to register two consecutive top-10 finishes after Billy Joe Patton on the PGA Tour. Patton finished as T8 in the 1957 US Open and 8th in the 1958 Masters.
Before his T2 finish at the 2024 John Deere Classic, Luke Clanton had finished as T10 at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic. After the tournament, Clanton said (via Golfweek):
"We came into the week with pretty high expectations, I think I kind of reached that expectation for sure. Of course you want to win. But again, to do what I did out there today was awesome. It’s just a blessing to be here, man."
Clanton scored eight birdies in the final round. He scored two birdies on the 3rd and 7th holes. On the back nine, he started with two birdies on the 10th and 11th birdies. He secured another birdie on the 14th hole and concluded his round with three consecutive birdies on the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes. Talking about his final birdies, he said (via Golfweek):
"It's unreal to make a birdie on the last hole and do all that."
Luke Clanton tied for the second position with C.T. Pan and Michael Thorbjornsen. David Thompson emerged as the winner at the 2024 John Deere Classic with a score of 28-under 256.
Luke Clanton's parents became emotional after his performance at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic
Last week, Luke Clanton finished T10 at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic. The tournament was held from Thursday, June 27 to 30 at Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, Michigan. Talking about his performance, Clanton's father David, who was also the young golfer's first coach, said (via PGA Tour):
"It's been amazing, it's been humbling. I mean, we started this journey at four, maybe three and a half, four years old, and it was meant just for this, and we're here. It's any father's dream to see their child get here, especially if you're the one that taught your child and hoped that he did a good job."
Luke Clanton carded 3-under 69 and 4-under 68 in the first two rounds to make the cut. He had a sensational third round where he scored 7-under 65 and then an even par 72 in the final round. Talking about his performance, Clanton's mother Rhonda said (via PGA Tour):
"Coming here has been just fun, to have the opportunity for him, and for him to shine like this, because we know he's good, but now maybe the rest of the pro world might know he's good, you know, because we know, we know he'll make it, we know. It's just he knows now, that's what's important for me," she said.
