Alfred Dunhill Links Championship: Format, venues, history and more

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was created in 2001 with an original format. The event is played by an equal number of amateurs and professionals, who form duos with one player from each category.

The first three rounds of the event are played at different venues: The Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links, and Kingsbarns Golf Links. After 54 holes, the top 60 professionals and top 20 amateurs (plus ties) make the cut and advance to the final round at St Andrews.

The event has been the stage for many celebrities from other sports and show business to showcase their golfing prowess. Gary Lineker, Boris Becker, Michael Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Justin Timberlake and Michael Phelps are among those who have competed.

On the professional side, several top players have played and won the tournament. They include Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomerie, Martin Kaymer and Tyrrell Hatton. Harrington and Hatton are the only multiple winners with two victories each.

Hatton holds the 'aggregate' and 'to par' records for the event (24-under 264), which he set when he won in 2017. Hatton (2016) and David Howell (2013) both shot 23-under 265.

The field for the 2024 edition is one of the strongest in recent years, with the presence of several top players from the European Tour, PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick and Brooks Koepka stand out.
