The 2024 BMW Championship is all set to be held from August 22 to 25 at the Castle Pines Golf Club. This tournament marks the second leg of the postseason playoffs, where the world's elite golfers will battle it out for the coveted top spot in the FedEx Cup rankings.
The first tournament was the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which was held from August 15 to 19. Hideki Matusyama won the tournament with a score of -17, beating Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland, who finished in joint second place. Here's what Matsuyama said to the PGA Tour after his victory:
“I felt today's victory slipping away at that point because 17 and 18 are difficult holes enough, let alone to birdie them. But I was fortunate enough to birdie 17. Immediately I thought, 'Oh, man, this is going to be a tough tee shot at 18. I've got to keep it in the fairway.' I'm grateful I was able to do it.”
Scottie Scheffler finished in fourth place at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, but still holds a lead of around 1000 points over Schauffele. The top 50 golfers in the rankings will now advance to the BMW Championship. Notable players who failed to qualify for the tournament include Tom Kim and Min Woo Lee.
Viktor Hovland's strong second-place finish propelled him nearly 40 spots up the rankings to his current position at 16th. Rookie golfer Nick Dunlap, who is having a fantastic year so far, continued his impressive run as he secured a spot in the BMW Championship after a commendable fifth-place finish at the St. Jude Championship.
The BMW Championship will boast a prize purse of $20 million, ensuring that every golfer who competes will receive a substantial payout. The winner will walk away with $3,600,000, while the runner-up will receive $2,160,000. The 50th place finisher will also walk away with a sizeable sum of $66,000.
