It's the "Majors Season" and not only in men's golf. The Chevron Championship, LPGA Tour's 2024 first major, will begin on Thursday, April 18, at Carlton Woods, and all eyes are on the event.

Women's golf is getting more and more backing from sponsors and The Chrevron Championship purse is one example. The event has a purse of $7.9 million, an increase of over 50% from last year's purse ($5.2 million).

The purse increase also means a jump for the winner's prize. Whoever takes The Chevron Championship title will walk away with a check for $1.2 million, $390,000 more than Lilia Vu collected when she won the tournament in 2023.

On this topic, LPGA Tour commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan had this to say (via Sports Illustrated):

"This is about the best players in the world coming together to play for something that really matters, so that’s first and foremost. But I think them playing for a purse that is commensurate with their world-class talent, which I say all the time is really important."
"I think it’s a symbol of how Chevron views the value of our athletes and of the LPGA. It’s how the world views the talent of our athletes, and so it’s practical because obviously playing for more money when you’re the best in the world is important."
"By getting a purse to 7.9, to having a long-term commitment with a partner that sees it's about building something that matters over a long period of time. And it takes time to change things. It takes time to move mindset. It takes time to bring fans into a community."

It has already been announced that another of the majors of the women's season, the Women's US Open, will receive a significant increase in its purse for the 2024 edition. The event will have a prize purse of $12 million, $1 million more than the previous year.

A look at the history of The Chevron Championship

The Chevron Championship is one of the oldest events in women's golf. It was founded in 1972 and was given the "major" status 11 years later.

The event was born, thanks to the strenuous efforts of actress and singer Dinah Shore. In fact, the tournament was named after her in its early stages (Colgate-Dinah Shore Winner's Circle) and earned Shore her induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame.

Some of the greatest players in history have played in and won The Chevron Championship. Annika Sorenstam is one of three players to have won it three times. Dottie Pepper holds the record for the event (19-under 269) while another multiple winner and Hall of Famer, Karrie Webb, set the biggest margin of victory (10 strokes).
