A look at the history of the Italian Open

The Italian Open is one of the oldest tournaments still played in Europe. The event was first played in 1925 and since then has been played annually, except in 1933, from 1939 to 1946 and from 1961 to 1970.

Since 1972, the event has been part of the European Tour (now DP World Tour) calendar. The circuit elevated it to its Golden Series between 2017 and 2019, but then returned to being a regular event.

The event has always been attractive for most of the top players on the European circuit. Local idol and major champion Francesco Molinari has won it twice, the same amount as double masters champion Bernhard Langer.

Other European stars also shone at the Italian Open, although they were unable to win. These include five-time major champion Seve Ballesteros (runner-up in 1983) and three-time major champion Padraig Harrington (runner-up in 1999).

The event has been played at most of the best golf courses in Italy. The venue that has hosted it the most times is the Circolo Golf Villa d'Este, with 12 editions, although the tournament has not returned there since 1972. The three editions prior to 2024 were played at the renowned Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

The aggregate record (262) was set by Percy Allis when he won in 1935, then matched by Francesco Molinari in 2016 and by Thorbjørn Olesen in 2018. The to par record (25 under) has been held by Hennie Otto since 2008.
