A look at the history of the Open de France
The Open de France is one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in the world of golf. Its first edition was played in 1906 and its first champion was French legend Arnaud Massy.
Massy won his national open four times, but he is not the event's top winner. That honor belongs to Jersey Island player Aubrey Boomer with five titles.
The tournament has been played at a number of venues throughout France. Le Golf National has hosted by far the most editions with 30, followed by Racing Club de France La Boulie in Versailles with 20.
Another legendary player with four victories in the event, Seve Ballesteros, holds the record to par (21 under) since winning at Golf de Saint-Germain in 1985. The aggregate record of 261 was set by Lu Liang-Huan of Taiwan when he won at Golf de Biarritz-Le Phare in 1971.
The event has been part of the European Tour (now the DP World Tour) calendar since 1972. In 2017 and 2018, it was one of the Rolex Series tournaments but that status was subsequently withdrawn and it is now a regular calendar event.
The Open de France's most illustrious winners include the aforementioned Massy and Ballesteros as well as Major champions Bobby Locke, Byron Nelson, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Retief Goosen and Jose Maria Olazabal, among others.
