The Solheim Cup for 2024 is officially set. The international tournament will take place next month from September 13-15 and the teams' automatic qualifiers have been announced.
Much like the Ryder Cup, players can automatically book spots on the American and European teams based on their performance and ranking points. Here's who qualified for the event:
Who's playing the Solheim Cup 2024 for Team USA and Europe?
Nelly Korda, the World No. 1, was an automatic qualifier. She finished T2 at the AIG Women's Open, but she also won six titles this year. That includes the Chevron Championship. Overall, she has had a season for the ages, so she's in the Solheim Cup.
Korda is joined by Lilia Vu, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Lauren Coughlin, Andrea Lee, and Megan Khang. Rose Zhang also qualified for her second Solheim Cup by being ranked ninth in the world. Alison Lee (ranked 25 in the world) hasn't played a Solheim in nine years but also made it. The USA's roster is mostly set with these players.
Stacy Lewis, the USA's captain, said that she's looking forward to the competition after a long qualifying period. She was quoted as saying (via Golf Monthly):
“I’m just excited to have the team finalized. Much of this crew is repeating from 2023, so a lot of them have experience. We had five that were qualified coming into the week, and I’m happy to have Megan and Andrea back again. They were big parts of last year's success.”
The seven automatic qualifiers finished the season ahead of the point threshold, while Lee and Zhang got in due to their Rolex ranks. Team Europe had two automatic qualifiers and six more via the world rankings.
Charley Hull topped the points list for the European side, and she is joined by Esther Henseleit, who is making her debut in the Solheim this year. The other six automatically in by virtue of world ranking are:
- Celine Boutier, France
- Maja Stark, Sweden
- Linn Grant, Sweden
- Carlota Ciganda, Spain
- Madelene Sagstrom, Sweden
- Leona Maguire, Ireland
Team Europe captain Suzann Pettersen said (via Golf Monthly):
“The European team is looking great right now for the 2024 Solheim Cup. Congratulations to the eight players who have automatically qualified. We have so much experience on the team but it’s also great to have Esther making her Solheim Cup debut this year. The European players have been putting in great performances this year and we’re excited for September.”
The Solheim Cup will be played from September 13 to 15 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. The two sides tied last time, but the United States holds a 10-8 lead in the competition overall.
Europe will try to put its star players to good use in closing that gap. Each team has not yet made its remaining captain's choices for the rosters.
