Brief history of the US Senior Open and more

The US Senior Open has been played since 1980, under the direction of the USGA. It is one of the five events recognized as Majors by the PGA Tour Champions and has equal status with the European Legends Tour.

Most of the players who have shined in the Open category of professional golf have won the US Senior Open. The first edition was won by Roberto De Vicenzo and among the champions are Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus.

The aggregate record (261) was set by Steve Stricker when he won in 2019. The record to par (20 under) is held by Fred Funk since his 2009 victory.

Eight players have won the U.S. Open and then its Senior counterpart. Only two of them (Palmer and Nicklaus) also won the US Amateur. Tiger Woods could join this select "club" when he becomes eligible to play on the tour.

The defending champion is Bernhard Langer who in 2023 won his second edition of the event. Langer also became the oldest champion at 65 years and 10 months old.

The event will be played at the Newport Country Club. It is a course steeped in history, as it was founded in 1893, under the designs of William Davis. The course had the honor of hosting the inaugural US Open and the inaugural US Amateur, both in 1895.

The US Amateur returned there 100 years later (1995) with the victory of Tiger Woods. Another legend, Annika Sorenstam, won the US Women's Open there in 2006.
