A Quick Recap of the 2023 WWT Championship
Last year's World Wide Technology Championship was held from November 2 to 5, 2023, at El Cardonal at Diamante. The four-day event was won by Erik van Rooyen. He started his campaign at the tournament with a round of 68, beginning on the tenth hole with two birdies on the front nine. He carded four birdies and two bogeys on the back nine, finishing at 4-under 68.
The South African golfer started the second round with an eagle on the first hole. He shot two birdies and an eagle on the front nine and six birdies with a bogey on the back nine for a round of 8-under 64.
His impressive gameplay continued in the third round, where he shot five birdies, an eagle, and a bogey for 6-under 66. Van Rooyen was exceptional in the final round, shooting 9-under 63 with eight birdies, an eagle, and a bogey, finishing at 27-under. He registered a two-stroke win over Camilo Villegas and Matt Kuchar.
Speaking of his win last year, Erik van Rooyen said (via ESPN):
"Quite numb after that putt went in on 18. You imagine yourself full of euphoria and just being ecstatic and I was just numb. I think it's because of everything the past six days with my friend Jon [Trasamar] being so sick. I guess just the moment just hasn't hit me yet."
Erik van Rooyen will return to defend his title this year. He has been impressive with his game this season. Having played in 23 events he made the cut in 17 and finished runner-up at the Cognizant Classic. He also achieved four top-10 finishes this season.
