The tournament now known as the Farmers Insurance Open was first played in 1952 as the San Diego Open. It was played at various courses in the San Diego area until 1967. In 1968, it began its relationship with Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course, which continues to this day.
Throughout its history, the tournament has attracted the best players of each era. Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Tiger Woods, among others, have played and won here.
Woods himself is the all-time leading winner of the Farmers Insurance Open with seven victories, including four in a row (2005-2008). In 1999, Woods won the event with a score of 266 (-22), tying the record set by George Burns in 1987.
Woods holds two other records at this event, the largest margin of victory (8 strokes over Ryuji Imada in 2008) and the 18-hole South Course record (62) set in 1999. The North Course record is 61, set by Mark Brooks in 1991 and tied by Brandt Snedeker in 2007.
The San Diego Open was also the first tournament in PGA Tour history to feature an African-American player. That historic role went to legendary boxer Joe Louis, who played on a sponsor's exemption.
