PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan addressed the media before the 2024 Travelers Championship. The upcoming Signature PGA Tour event will start on Thursday, June 20, and conclude on Sunday, June 23. It's the final Signature event of 2024 with an elevated purse and limited field.
Ahead of the tournament's commencement, Jay Monahan spoke to the media and provided an update on the negotiation deal between the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the PGA Tour. He also highlighted the framework agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, which was announced last year.
Here are the three major takeaways from Jay Monahan's press conference at the Travelers Championship:
3 big takeaways from PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan’s presser at Travelers Championship
#1 PGA Tour-PIF Negotiation deal update
The PGA Tour has been in a negotiation deal with the PIF, which is the backbone of LIV Golf. Monahan provided an update about the same. He revealed that he has been in talks with PIF officials and held calls with them "multiple times a week." Monahan said (via Golf Week):
"I’d like to give you more, but I would say to you that there are a lot of important aspects that we talked about in that meeting, aspects that will be important towards the final agreement that we got consensus on, and then there were a number of areas that we recognized that we weren’t going to, but identified them and that’s what we’re focused on.”
#2 Tiger Woods' lifetime exemption into Signature events
Recently, Tiger Woods earned a special exemption from the PGA Tour Policy Board to compete in the Signature events. Jay Monahan expressed his happiness about the decision, highlighting Tiger Woods' glorious career in which he won over 80 PGA Tour events.
Speaking of Woods, Monahan said:
“It’s important to me because, as the exemption says, the man has won more than 80 events and I think being able to give him the opportunity to compete in these events … any event he’s ever played in, he’s made it bigger, he’s made it better and he’s drawn more eyeballs to it.”
#3 PGA Tour-LIV Golf framework agreement
Jay Monahan also updated the framework agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. In June 2023, he announced a shocking merger between both circuits and revealed a framework agreement. At the press conference, Monahan stated that the agreement is "still relevant" and that they are working on bringing major changes to the Tour. He said:
"I would say that the framework agreement is still relevant, there are aspects of it that still continue to be in play, but I would put it that we’ve all stepped back and we’ve started anew. Particularly with the introduction of our transaction committee, our players’ involvement … I would say that the vast majority of what we’re talking about, we’re building from the ground up.”
Meanwhile, the PGA Tour players will tee off at this week's Travelers Championship on Thursday, June 20, at TPC River Highlands.
