Hideki Matsuyama and Shota Hayafuji have built a strong on-course partnership over the years. They won the 2021 Masters together, and after Matsuyama's victory, Hayafuji took off his hat and bowed to the Japanese golfer as a mark of respect.
Matsuyama and Hayafuji won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics earlier this year and also put forth an impressive performance at the 2024 Presidents Cup.
"I'm really happy"- Hideki Matsuyama on winning Sunday single at the 2024 Presidents Cup
Hideki Matsuyama played well in the finale of the 2024 Presidents Cup. In the Sunday finals, he registered an impressive 1-up win over Scottie Scheffler. Following the match, during a press conference, the Japanese golfer opened up about his victory against World No. 1, saying (via ASAP Sports):
"The last putt right there I was super nervous. My hands were shaking a lot. I'm really happy I was able to win this match."
The Sunday match started with Scottie Scheffler taking an early lead. He won the first hole and maintained the lead until the sixth hole. On the seventh, Matsuyama made a birdie and won the hole, tying up the match.
The former World No. 2 won both the seventh and eighth holes, taking the lead in the game. However, Scheffler bounced back, winning the ninth hole, and the match was tied after the first nine holes.
In the second half of the tournament, Hideki Matsuyama won four holes, including the 11th, 14th, 15th, and 17th holes, while Scheffler won the 12th, 13th, and 16th holes. Ultimately, Matsuyama secured a 1-up victory in the game.
Although Matsuyama was impressive in the final round of the Presidents Cup, he struggled in other rounds of the tournament. He lost his opening round fourball match against Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay by 2&1 while playing with Corey Conners. However, he quickly made a comeback and won the Friday foursome match against Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Unfortunately, he lost both of his matches on Saturday.
