J.T. Poston emerged victorious at the 2024 Shriners Children's Open, held at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the event, which concluded on 20 October, Tom Kim, the defending champion, had the best odds to win the tournament. However, he failed to make the cut.

On the other hand, some golfers overperformed their odds at the fourth FedExCup Fall event of the PGA Tour and surprised the fans and golf pundits.

The tournament proved to be one for the underdogs. Let's take a look at 5 golfers who overperformed their odds at the 2024 Shriners Children's Open:

5 golfers who overperformed their odds at the 2024 Shriners Children's Open

#1. J.T. Poston

  • Odds: +4000
  • Result: Winner

J.T. Poston had odds of +4000 coming at the Shriners Children's Open, as per CBS Sports. The 31-year-old had a great start to the year with two top-6 finishes in the first two starts of the season. However, lately, he struggled to find his form. In the last five starts, before the tournament, he had three missed cuts.

Poston won the tournament by one stroke over Doug Ghim and took home $1.26 million as prize money. This was his third PGA Tour victory on the 216th start. His earlier victories were at the 2019 Wyndham Championship and 2022 John Deere Classic.

#2. Doug Ghim

  • Odds: +7000
  • Result: Runner-up

Doug Ghim entered the week with odds of +7000 at the Shriners Children's Open but played far better than expected. Having just one top-10 finish this season, the chances of Ghim finishing as a runner-up were minimal.

This was his best finish on the PGA Tour, also his first runner-up in 141 starts. He won $763,000 and 300 FedExCup Fall points for his performance. He jumped 23 spots to 70th in the FedExCup Fall standings.

#3. Matti Schmid

  • Odds: +5000
  • Result: T3

Matti Schmid entered the Fall season after an underwhelming regular season where he finished 125th. Ahead of the Shriners Children's Open, he had T16 and T3 finishes at the Sanderson Farms Championship and Black Desert Championship, respectively, but his name still didn't come up in the top-10 odds for this week.

However, the German player showed his experience in the first two rounds and finished decently in the final round. He tied for third with Rico Hoey and jumped 21 spots to 84th in the FedExCup Fall standings.

#4. Rico Hoey

  • Odds: +10000
  • Result: T3

Rico Hoey was not even in the top 40 favorites for the event with +10000 odds. However, he was unstoppable in all the rounds. He fired 64, 66, 69 and 66 in the four rounds to finish 19-under this week. He jumped 19 spots to 83rd in the FedExCup Fall standings.

#5. Gary Woodland

  • Odds: +10000
  • Result: T9

Gary Woodland had similar odds to Hoey at the tournament. The 40-year-old has had an underwhelming 2024 season. The four-time PGA Tour winner failed to register a top-10 finish this year. He had 10 missed cuts in the prior 23 starts on the PGA Tour. He finished 155th in the FedExCup standings.

Woodland was tied for third after the third round but finished tied for ninth at the Shriners Children's Open. He jumped from 148th to 137th in the FedExCup Fall standings.
