Count Brooks Koepka among the many who are excited about the new film Happy Gilmore 2. The original, which came out in 1996, is one of the most beloved golf movies out there. Its long-awaited sequel is set for release in 2025, and Netflix just released a new look at the movie.
The streaming giant has a partnership with Adam Sandler, the star who will reprise his role as the titular character. That's why recent Sandler flicks like Hustle or Spaceman went straight to streaming.
In this new look, the aged Happy comes face to face with his former nemesis, Shooter McGavin. It is an iconic face-off, and it's one that has the LIV Golf star anxious to see the movie.
Koepka said:
"Just Tapppppppppp It."
That is a reference to the iconic line from the first movie. McGavin was played then by Christopher McDonald, who will reprise his role as the iconic villain. Julie Bowen, who played Virginia Venit, is back in the sequel as well.
The rest of the cast is pretty star-studded. It includes Ben Stiller, Margaret Qualley, Travis Kelce, Nick Swardson, Bad Bunny, Lee Trevino, Benny Safdie, and Dennis Dugan.
There aren't many golf movies out, and few reached the acclaim of the 1996 comedy hit, so there's a great deal of anticipation around Happy Gilmore 2. That includes Koepka and other pro golfers.
Currently, the plot is unknown. The movie is being directed by Kyle Newacheck, whose film and television work includes Murder Mystery 2 (with Sandler), What We Do in the Shadows, and Parks and Recreation.
The sequel was penned by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, who wrote the original as well as Pixels, Hubie Halloween, and The Wedding Singer, so he's familiar with Sandler. He also wrote 112 episodes of Saturday Night Live.
Brooks Koepka can't shake off rust in Showdown defeat
Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau had plenty of time to rest leading into the Showdown with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. The Showdown was a The Match-esque competition between the four, split down tour lines.
McIlroy and Scheffler had played more recently, while DeChambeau and Koepka had been off since LIV Golf ended its season on September 22. The rust proved to be too much as they were soundly defeated by the PGA Tour star pair.
DeChambeau said after via ESPN that he hopes for a rematch:
"I'd love to have another opportunity. It was a bit of a pillow fight for us."
The PGA side won all three of the sets in the Showdown, and only one of them was ever really in contention. It was a resounding defeat for Brooks Koepka and his LIV teammate.
