Popular actor Bill Murray is one of the top amateur stars at the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Murray is an accomplished golfer, but at the age of 74, top-level tournaments are certainly a demanding physical test.

Proof of this was on display during the third round of the event on Saturday, 5 October. Bill Murray and his teammate Jordan Smith were playing on the Old Course at St Andrews when the actor had to lie on the ground and stretch his back.

The moment was posted by Sky Sports Golf on its official X (formerly Twitter) account and received more than 40,000 views in two hours. Bill Murray did not look overly sore, but did need some light treatment on his back.

Bill Murray is famous for his humorous approach to golf. He can often be seen on the courses in extravagant attire and having hilarious interactions with other players and spectators.

However, Murray is a top amateur player with an excellent handicap of 7.2, according to Diario AS. As well as maintaining his game, Murray is a regular competitor at high-profile pro-am events such as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the PGA Tour and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the DP World Tour.

Bill Murray's acting career began in 1973 and includes landmark titles such as the Ghostbusters saga (for which he received an Oscar nomination), The Grand Budapest Hotel and Lost in Translation (for which he received the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards, among others).

Bill Murray and golf

Bill Murray's relationship with golf goes back a long way. Suffice it to say that the actor paid for part of his high school education by working as a golf caddie. In 1988, Murray told the New York Times about his experience:

"The kids who were members of the club were despicable; you couldn't believe the attitude they had. I mean, you were literally walking barefoot in a T-shirt and jeans, carrying some privileged person's sports toys on your back for five miles.''

Through it all, his love of golf only grew. As Murray evolved as a player, golf took over several places in his life.

In 2001, he teamed up with his brothers to open the Murray Bros. Caddyshack restaurant, a clear reference to his 1980 film Caddyshack. The restaurant's first location is at World Golf Village near St. Augustine, Florida, while the second has been operating at the Crowne Plaza Rosemont Hotel in Chicago since 2018.

In 2016, Murray again partnered with one of his brothers, Joel, to launch a golf apparel line, William Murray Golf. The brand continues to operate today with both physical and online stores.

The 2024 edition of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will be the tenth for Murray, who has shown a similar commitment to the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California and other events around the world.
