85-yo JoAnne Carner shoots her age at the US Senior Women’s Open, says she’s headed to the bar post round

JoAnne Carner, 85, keeps breaking her own record as the oldest player to compete in a USGA Championship every year. The LPGA legend is currently competing in the 2024 US Senior Women's Open at Fox Chapel Golf Club, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Carner carded 14-over 85 in the first round of the event on Thursday. On the front nine, she scored a birdie, three bogeys, and a double bogey to aggregate score of 4-over 40 in 9 holes. However, the back nine didn't go as she would have desired. She scored four bogeys and three double bogeys in the last nine holes.

On the last hole, she scored a bogey and shot her age. A spectator from the gallery said (via Golfweek):

"You hit a nice one!"

She responded:

"That's cause I'm headed to the bar."

This is the seventh time JoAnne Carner has shot her age or better in the U.S. Senior Women's Open. She has matched her age with her score in six of the last seven rounds at the tournament. However, she wasn't happy with her round and said (via Golfweek):

"I played really bad on the back. I didn't putt well. Then I lost my swing temporarily. I hit a couple shots that I thought were good, but not having played the course but one time, I ended up in trouble, in one of those bunkers, and you just have to hit it out."

JoAnne Carner is currently tied at 110th in a field of 120 golfers. Kaori Yamamoto is on the top of the leaderboard with a score of 4-under 67. Christa Johnson and Lisa Grimes are one shot behind and are tied for second. The winner of the tournament will win $180,000 of the total purse of $1 million.
