Adam Scott has provided an update on negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund in Saudi Arabia. The Australian is directly involved in the matter due to his status as Player Director.
Scott says the process will undergo "more movement soon," although he did not detail its magnitude. He also noted that the involvement of the U.S. Department of Justice adds uncertainty to the process (via AP):
"Soon there should be more movement. But it’s very difficult to bring all of this together, certainly from a competitions layout. It’s a lot. Someone has to compromise their product. I don’t like the sound of that generally. Who’s going to do it? Everyone a little bit? That’s not good. Someone a lot? That person is not going to be happy.
It’s really a tricky one. Obviously, it’s so complex and when the government [Justice] department is involved, I think we sit and just wait for them."
Scott is one of six Player Directors who serve on the PGA Tour Policy Board, along with Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Camilo Villegas, and Webb Simpson, apart from three other non-player members.
A look at Adam Scott's tenure as Player Director
Adam Scott began his tenure as Player Director on the PGA Tour Policy Board in early 2024 and his term runs through 2026. Previously, he was a member and chairman of the Players Advisory Council. During his tenure, several organizational changes occurred including an agreement with Strategic Sports Group and the creation of PGA Tour Enterprises, of which the Australian is a member of the Board of Directors.
Negotiations with the PIF have also continued and a three-member negotiating subcommittee including Scott, Woods, and former player director Rory McIlroy was formed. There have been few specific details on the progress of negotiations between the PGA Tour and the PIF, but contacts have intensified.
The leaders of both organizations, Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, have met twice in recent months. The first was at the DP World Tour's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where they even played a round together, and the second was at the Ladies European Tour's Aramco Team Series Riyadh. Contact between Player Directors and PIF representatives was also reported in 2024, including a meeting in the Bahamas after the Players Championship and New York after the TOUR Championship.
