Angel Ayora, 22, turned down an offer to play for LIV Golf. The Spaniard has just started his professional career, and his 2024 earnings don't exceed $330,000.
The news about turning down LIV's offer was published by the Spanish media TenGolf. According to the report, the offer received by Angel Ayora came from the Cleeks GC team, captained by Martin Kaymer. Cleeks GC has a vacancy after Kalle Samooja was relegated at the end of the season.
The report says that Angel Ayora took several days to consider the offer but eventually turned it down. In doing so, Ayora chose not to pursue the high prize money characteristic of the Greg Norman-led league.
Ayora began his professional career at the end of 2023 and earned his Challenge Tour card for 2024. He played in the Australian Open, his DP World Tour debut, where he finished tied 12th.
In 2024, Ayora played 24 events on the Challenge Tour, the feeder circuit to the DP World Tour. He made 21 cuts, won one tournament and finished in the top 10 in six others, including two runner-up finishes.
Those results allowed him to finish fourth in the circuit's internal standings (called the Race to Mallorca), which earned him his DP World Tour card. Ayora has played the first two tournaments of the season on the main European circuit (Australian PGA Championship and Australian Open), finishing T6 and T23, respectively.
Ayora made his PGA Tour debut in 2024 at the Puerto Rico Open, where he made the cut and tied for 72nd.
With these results, Ayora earned $329,995.08. Most of this amount ($266,654.42) came from his exploits on the Challenge Tour, while $55,222.66 was from the DP World Tour and $8120 for his PGA Tour performances.
Angel Ayora won't be another rising star to join LIV Golf
In deciding to remain on the DP World Tour, Ayora didn't follow in the footsteps of compatriots David Puig and Eugenio Chacarra. Both rising stars debuted on LIV Golf in 2022.
Since its inception, LIV Golf has pursued a strategy of signing young players as well as big stars. Apart from Puig and Chacarra, Caleb Surratt is a case in point. Surratt went straight from the classroom at the University of Tennessee to Legion XIII, the LIV team captained by Jon Rahm,
It's also the case of others like Matt Wolff and Joaquin Niemann, who were already established players on the PGA Tour. So far, Ayora hasn't commented on the reasons that motivated him to turn down the offer.
