Team Europe's Ryder Cup skipper, Luke Donald, is not in the field this week for the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. However, the British golfer has evidently been enjoying the tournament from afar, as he recently reacted to Nicolas Colsaerts' albatross.
The Belgian pro golfer is competing in the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at Kingsbarns Golf Course, which is now in its third round. He made a big splash during the third round as he scored an albatross on par-5 16th hole.
Donald shared a video posted by DP World Tour on X (formerly Twitter), and added,
"Are you kidding me!! The rarest of birds! Go Nico"
Colsaerts found the fairway on the 16th with his tee shot and had a fair amount of distance remaining. He decided to take up a long iron to reach the green. The 41-year-old golfer flushed his iron accurately and got the ball over the flag.
This was a perfect strategy as there was a downslope toward the hole, and the ball rolled down and went into the cup. Colsaerets did not realize immediately he had an albatross as he was far away from the green. A course official's signal informed him about the albatross.
Even though Luke Donald is not competing in the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, he is keeping an eye on most DP World Tour events. As a Ryder Cup skipper, Luke Donald will be looking to build a solid Team Europe for the upcoming 2025 Ryder Cup and retain the trophy.
Nicolas Colsaerts leads 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
Nicolas Colsaerts is leading the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after three rounds. He scored -21 after 12 holes in round three and has a lead of two strokes. The 41-year-old golfer is competing on the Kingsbarns Golf Course, having played on St. Andrews and Carnoustie on days one and two.
Compared to Kingsbarn, these two golf courses are more challenging, and Colsaerts rather impressively carded just two bogeys in two rounds. In the post-round press conference on Friday, the Belgian golfer revealed his thoughts on the challenges of these two courses. He said (via ASAP Sports),
"I've been playing pretty well since yesterday. St Andrews, I really plotted my way around.
"It's normally a lot harder than this (Carnoustie). It blows a lot harder than this. And the light's great. A couple of times during the last couple of days, you had that nice light that's coming in. It's been great. And you know, like I said, having played this tournament over and over over the years, this definitely helps maneuvering the trouble."
In the pro-am team competition, Nicolas Colsaerts is paired with Ari Emanuel. They are placed at T9 and will make it to the final day, as the top-20 ranked teams make the final round.
