Rory McIlroy had an average first day at the WM Phoenix Open with a score of 2-over 73 sitting at T-82 after the first round. However, the World No. 1 displayed a moment of brilliance at the par-4 second hole.
Rory's tee shot went wide into a bunch of trees and close to the metal fence. To everyone's surprise, he pulled off an incredible recovery shot from there and somehow found the green, leaving the announcers speechless.
"Oh my goodness...Woah! Are you kidding?! What?! What a shot!"
As per the TourCast, McIlroy's second shot covered a distance of 127 yards to reach the center of the green.
It wasn't just the commentators, the shot even left social media in awe. Here's a look at a few of the reactions:
"I do this every round."
"Those fans are very trusting! Nice shot👏"
"I'm taking out about a half-dozen people there. Holy cow."
"I’m totally smoking that fence mid downswing."
"Why didn’t he drop to the front of the trees like other Pros 🙀🙀"
"This is just not ok that a human can do this"
"Rory is the best Sure hope he wins the Masters"
"Unfreakinbelivable"
"He’s become a preacher…but you can’t knock how talented he is with a golf club in his hand"
"Been there, done that….maybe once in my lifetime. Not been there, that number is in the thousands.…"
"Now show the spotter on top of the trees that threw the ball on the green."
"My God, how far off the fairway was his drive? I guess it's a green hit, pretty average!"
"I’m needing a shoulder replacement after my club gets tangled in that fence."
Rory McIlroy finishes at 2-over 73 after Day 1 of the WM Phoenix Open
Having last played at the CJ Cup in October, Rory McIlroy is returning to the PGA Tour after four months. Rory didn't have a fantastic first day at TPC Scottsdale, as he could only score 2-over 73 amidst the challenges of the weather.
"I struggle off the tee here," McIlroy explained his challenges at TPC Scottsdale. "I feel like all the fairway bunkers are right in my landing zones. But it's a challenge, and again, like I'm trying to embrace that challenge."
McIlroy is looking to win his third event in a row on the PGA Tour after winning his last two starts on the Tour, the Tour Championship in August, and the CJ Cup in October. McIlroy was last seen at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic two weeks ago where he triumphed.
Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin topped the leaderboard after the first day of the WM Phoenix Open at 5-under 66. Xander Schauffele finished the first round with a score of 4-under 67.
Local hero Jon Rahm could only play till the 13th hole (3-under) before the game got suspended due to bad light. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler is at 1-under after 11 holes. The battle for World No. 1 is getting interesting as Scheffler and Rahm, the current World No. 2 and 3 look to dethrone Rory at the top.
