John McEnroe took a jibe at Rory McIlroy’s long Major drought. The Holywood-born golfer has won four Majors in his career. However, his last Major victory came in 2014.
Stealing some time ahead of his DP World Tour outing, the current World No. 3 attended the 2024 US Open semifinal between Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz on September 7.
Seeing McIlroy in attendance, commentator Chris Fowler was quick to say (via Golf Magic):
"Multiple Major winner Rory McIlroy."
However, McEnroe took a jibe at McIlroy’s Major title drought and quickly commented:
"Been a long time though."
Earlier this year at the 2024 US Open (golf), Rory McIlroy was very close to a win but made three bogeys on the final four holes, missing the chance to break his Major drought by just one stroke, losing the title to LIV golfer Bryson DeChambeau. His first Major win was at the US Open in 2011, and the following year, he won another Major at the PGA Championship.
He won two Majors in 2014, including The Open Championship and the PGA Championship. However, since then, he finished runner-up at The Open Championship in 2018, solo second at the Masters in 2022, and runner-up at the US Open in 2023 and 2024, still waiting to win another major.
